Cousins and Birmingham duo TT x Raph earned themselves the title of ‘Best Birmingham Duo’ at the recent BE Awards. Their latest single, ‘Brumtown’, merges a trap sound with afro-swing elements. We caught up with them to find out more.
Most people don’t take any notice of Birmingham but we wanted to let everyone know that Birmingham is the best city in the UK.
First up, tell us about yourselves - what got you into music?
First of all, music has been in our blood. From childhood till now, we love to create and listen to different type of music and how it’s been made and making our own versions. Just being surrounded by musical vibes edged into making our own music that we enjoy and letting others listen and vibe out to our music as well.
Were there any particular bands or artists you took inspiration from?
There are many artists that have inspired us within music. Some of the top inspirations currently have been J Hus, Dave, Stormzy, Krept and Konan and there are many more artists that have inspired us.
How would you describe your musical styles?
We would describe our music styles being versatile. We indulge in a lot of genres. We’re not the type of people that only listen to one particular genre. It ranges from hip hop to RnB to reggae. Sometimes we might listen to garage and house, but it really depends on the mood and environment we are in.
If you could collaborate with any living artist, who would it be?
There are many artists that we would love to collaborate with.
Raph: For me, it would have to be J Hus hands down. He’s one of the and if not the best rappers in the UK right now!
TT: For me, I would have to say Chip. His sense of versatility, lyrics and flow is just crazy!
You’ve collaborated on the single ‘Brumtown’. What’s it about?
‘Brumtown’ is about the city that we grew up in. The city that we love. We mention some iconic places in Birmingham and overall we wanted to make a song that would uplift Birmingham. Most people don’t take any notice of Birmingham but we wanted to let everyone know that Birmingham is the best city in the UK.
When did you write it and where did you record it?
We wrote ‘Brumtown’ in our homes and recorded it in TT’s house where he mixed and mastered the song.
How does ‘Brumtown’ use your musical styles?
‘Brumtown’ has a laid back, old school beat and feel to it so with a catchy hook and really simple but effective lyrics, this created a composition where you can hear what Birmingham is about, but also vibe and enjoy the song.
What are your hopes for ‘Brumtown’?
Our hopes for ‘Brumtown’ is that we can define Brumtown on the map. We want the world to know about our amazing city and the amazing talent that comes from this city. Also we want everyone from Birmingham to be proud of where they’re from and own it.
How’s 2020 looking in what’s becoming a crazy year?
2020 has been a crazy start but we are not focusing on the negatives. We’re just finding ways to maximise this opportunity for ourselves and we have many more things coming and we are not letting COVID-19 stop us!
Finally, if you could go back in time and give yourself one piece of advice, when would it be and what would you say?
If we could go back, we would go back to the very start of the journey and say to be yourself and be the best you, you can be. No point trying to be like someone else because they ave perfected that. No one can perfect how you are.
