The latest incarnation of Bloc is as a series of 10 clubnights, and this was the first debut at the stripped-back warehouse space in Hackney Wick which Bloc organisers have taken on as their own.
The minimalist setting is effectively two areas: the front offering boothed seating and a bar, the back room a performance space with a L’Acoustics soundsystem. Arriving when the party was in full swing to the Detroit techno sounds of Juan Atkins, the mood was reminiscent of Bloc Weekends at Butlins when the techno was pounding and the crowd were focused on absorbing every tune.
There was room to dance, an excellent quality of sound and impressive lighting making for a fine environment to appreciate the music. Atkins stayed true to his Detroit roots with a modern twist while Billy Nasty kept the pace going until his final selection with gritty, energetic techno.
Next up for Bloc is Omar S on Saturday, March 30th and a Long Island Electrical Systems showcase featuring Ron Morelli, Steve Summers, Svengalisghost and Delroy Edwards on Sunday, March 31st. For details go to www.bloclondon.com.
