Album Review: Midnight Forever by Delta Heavy

There is nothing like the sugar rush of a great drum & bass track, a single shot that gets added to your playlist favourites on rotation. But sometimes you’re left wanting more, and great artists that craft great albums will stand the test of time. Delta Heavy’s triumphant third studio offering Midnight Forever has dropped, and cements the duo’s form for epic, vocal drum & bass.

Working with collaborators familiar and new, it’s Delta Heavy's underground appeal coupled with their presence in the wider electronic music scene that means tracks have already hit millions of streams. With heavy rotations across radio, and dropping the DNB 60 on the Radio 1 Drum & Bass show this month, this could be their most successful album to date.

It opens with a trio of tracks that feel dedicated to UK club culture. Title track 'Midnight Forever' is a rave appreciation, 'Get Down With Me Tonight' featuring Hayley May is a dancefloor invitation, and electro bass banger 'E-N-D' moves on in the night to the afters.

It opens with a trio of tracks that feel dedicated to UK club culture.

'Babylon' featuring YOU is distinctly Delta Heavy, and testament to the emotive and anthemic sound they have crafted. 'Ecstasy' is another pulsing electro banger before bringing back poetic lyrics on 'Punching Holes', and 'Never Alone' featuring Hayley May, but both are dancefloor pleasers with satisfying bass drops.

'Bad Decisions' featuring Cameron Warren feels like hangxiety waiting to happen in song form but in such a good way. 'Anywhere' switches things up into a delicious house banger, and in 'Delirium' featuring Subsonic a trance house influence can be heard.

'Nocturnal' then brings us back to proper drum & bass business, teaming up with Grafix. 'Sanctuary', featuring Lauren L’aimant for a wonderful follow up to 'Against The Tide', contains the blissful electronica elements Delta Heavy do so well.

Listen out for the stompers in the club, then come back and listen to the whole album.

Then there is a solid trio of vocal tracks to close in the uplifting 'Chasing Gold' featuring Jazmine Johnson, 'Deep Down' featuring the recognisable talent of Ethan Holt, and 'High On You'. Listen out for the stompers in the club, then come back and listen to the whole album. This is surely their most accomplished and mature body of work to date. The artwork even points to a new phase: reflections of the past but hitting new levels.

In their own words:

“Midnight Forever encapsulates everything that has brought us to this point: every club, festival, and rave; every hour in the studio, whether frustrating or fruitful; every high and low on this wild journey. It is a tapestry of diverse influences and personal experiences that have guided our musical path. Having experimented with various genres in the past, we see Midnight Forever as our ode to drum and bass, a love letter to the music that captured our hearts as underage teenagers exploring the London scene. The process of writing this album has been cathartic, providing a space for introspection at home and hedonism on the dancefloor. We are immensely proud of the music on Midnight Forever and invite listeners to experience it with us, hoping to offer a timeless escape in a complicated world. The album seeks to create a world where the night never ends, a place of magic and mischief that marks the beginning of a new dawn for us.”

Having debuted the album extensively this year across major cities and summer festivals across Europe, North America, New Zealand and Australia, Delta Heavy now embark on the largest global tour of their career, debuting an all new visual experience that explores the world of Midnight Forever.
