Flow Festival 2019 reveals experimental music programme

Jlin, Aïsha Devi, Vessel, Lanark Artefax and Kelly Moran are among the acts who will be part of the Flow Festival experimental music programme ‘The Other Sound’. Aimed at showcasing fringe music with unorthodox sounds and approaches from the past, present and future, it will take over the Voimala venue when the festival returns to Suvilahti in Helsinki from Friday, August 9th to Sunday, August 11th.

Jlin will play with an audiovisual show created with Theresa Baumgartner, as well as performing at Wayne McGregor Company’s dance piece Autobiography Edits, presented by Flow Festival and the Finnish National Opera the two days before Flow Festival opens.

Other acts confirmed for ‘The Other Sound’ are Amnesia Scanner, Maarja Nuut & Ruum, Mary Lattimore, Bendik Giske, Ana Gutieszca, Saba Alizadeh and Quadrivium. Tuomas A Laitinen’s Cryptospores will be a performative installation that manifests itself as an experience resembling a concert while poet and author Hannu Salama will honour the connection between jazz and poetry with band Vapaat Radikaalit.

The classical side of ‘The Other Sound’ takes a look at the music and influence of composer and provocateur John Cage. Tristero Piano Trio presents a programme of pieces with visual and performative elements. Sibelius Academy’s NYKY Ensemble will present a whole set consisting of Cage’s early works.
