A$AP Rocky, Skepta, Disclosure and Paul Kalkbrenner are among the first acts confirmed for Sónar Barcelona 2019. Moving to July for one year from Thursday, July 18th to Saturday, July 20th, artists also confirmed include Actress, Deena Abdelwahed, Lotic, Nicola Cruz, K Á R Y Y N, Dixon, Floating Points, Maya Jane Coles, Amelie Lens, Andy C, Artwork, Blawan & Dax J, Ross From Friends, Bad Gyal and Octavian.
Sónar Barcelona’s one-off July edition, its 26th festival, will see 130 shows across the venues of Sónar by Day (Fira Montjuïc de Barcelona) and Sónar by Night (Gran Via de L’Hospitalet). The news comes after Time Out Barcelona distinguished Sónar with the Time Out Award 2018 for Sónar’s pioneering and transformative role, and “for making Barcelona more stimulating, enjoyable and audacious”.
Live hip-hop shows will come from A$AP Rocky and Skepta while Disclosure will perform a new DJ show featuring the sounds and themes of their forthcoming record. Paul Kalkbrenner will present his eighth album Parts of Life, and there will be audiovisual shows by Actress with an AI/AV show where Artificial Intelligence software takes centre, Lotic with a custom live show Endless Power featuring a spectacular light display and Tunisian producer Deena Abdelwahed’s Khonnar.
Contemporary classical music will get a twist by pianist Bruce Brubaker performing with Northern Irish electronic musician Max Cooper with their live reinterpretations of well-known pieces by Philip Glass with a show called ‘Glassforms’. Further innovative concerts will come from Ecuador’s Nicola Cruz, the Syrian American artist K Á R Y Y N and the Swiss-Spanish beatmaker Mans O.
Among the DJ sets at Sónar 2019, Dixon will play a closing set on Saturday, Floating Points will get the six hour sets at SonarCar on Friday and Maya Jane Coles will present her pseudonymous project ‘Nocturnal Sunshine’ on the SonarVillage stage at Sónar by Day. Amelie Lens, Artwork, Andy C and a one-off back-to-back from Blawan & Dax J. Ross From Friends, Octavian, Murlo, Bad Gyal, FKJ, Slikback, Hibotep, Catnapp, Cecilio G, Brat Star and D’Valentina complete the initial line-up.
The image for Sónar 2019, starring actress Angela Molina and Sónar’s booker Vir Rousse will show the journey by car of a mother and daughter through extraordinary worlds. As in some previous years, the festival’s image - created by Sergio Caballero - will take the form of a short film, only this year it will be a drama narrating the story of a mother who tries to convince her daughter not to commit suicide.
The congress for technology and creative industries, Sónar+D 2019 will take place as a prelude to and in parallel with Sónar by Day at Fira Montjuïc in Barcelona from Wednesday, July 17th to Saturday, July 20th.
