Dimensions Festival 2018 Preview Part 1 - Opening Concert, Boat and Tunnel Parties


The seventh edition of Dimensions Festival in Pula returns to a 2,000-year-old amphitheatre, beach, boats and an abandoned fort from Wednesday, August 29th to Sunday, September 2nd. In our first of two previews (read part 2 here), we take a closer look at the opening concert on the Wednesday and the four days of boat parties that follow, plus a new space hosting two events: a network of abandoned tunnels.

Nils Frahm will present his avant-garde approach to combining classical and electronic music.

Dimensions Festival 2018 opening concert

Dimensions kicks off with its annual opening concert at Pula’s amphitheatre featuring live performances from two acts at different ends of their musical careers. German electronic music pioneers Kraftwerk will present a 3-D show that showcases their continuing impact on the scene while composter Nils Frahm will present his avant-garde approach to combining classical and electronic music which has brought swift worldwide recognition. Nils will make use of a grand piano, upright piano, Roland Juno-60 and Rhodes piano with drum machines on the night.

Support will come from Dimensions regular Moodymann plus Nubya Garcia, Josey Rebelle and Debora Ipekel of the Dimensions DJ Directory.

The organisers are opening World War Two air raid shelters to host two tunnel parties with Resident Advisor.

Thursday, August 30th

All boat parties are three-hour voyages on the Adriatic, setting sail at 11.30am, 3.15pm and 7pm daily. Tribe Records curate the first with Saoirse, Alex T, Mike BC and Courtesy Patterns behind the decks. The afternoon boats will see Stamp the Wax host Marcellus Pittman, Øyvind Morken, Aaron L & Rosie Ama while Journey of Sound invite WLC b2b Felix Claus, Thang b2b Lebawski and Klaps b2b Bjeor on board.

The evening boats see Helena Hauff and Kancheli play the Bassiani voyage while Dimensions Soundsystem bring together Avalon Emerson, Josey Rebelle plus some of their own talent.

Thursday night is also the first chance to try a new venue at Dimensions Festival: Zerostrasse. The organisers are opening World War Two air raid shelters to host two tunnel parties with Resident Advisor. The Exaltics, Volvox, Saoirse and Josh Cheon of Dark Entries will play on Thursday night.

Friday, August 31st

Early risers will be treated to Underground Resistance (Mark Flash DJ set), Detroit In Effect and Hamish & Toby for the Pickle Factory presents Wavejumper. In the afternoon, get ship-shape for Abandon Silence featuring Peggy Gou, Heels & Souls and Andrew Hill or climb aboard Patternx x Flux with rRoxymore, Jon K, Charles Green and Wallauer & Reuben. The one sunset boat is Dure Vie with Skee Mask, Mezigue and Maxye.

Saturday, September 1st

Brunch by boat party on the Saturday with Fuse & We Bring You who have invited San Soda & Red D to play for the full three hours or opt for J.A.W. Family with Red Greg, Cosmic Slop and residents. The sole trip on the seas in the afternoon is Elgo Records with Alex Nut, Fatima, Steve Spacek and Shy One.

The evening boats see Total Refreshment Centre go top deck with Hugo Mendez (Sofrito), Born Cheating (Tiffs Joints) and Lexus Blondin (TRC) or side with The Move with Children of Zeus, Darkhouse Family and Rah (Darker Than Wax).

The second Zerostrasse tunnel party of the weekend will be on Saturday evening with Paula Temple, dBridge, Anastasia Kristensen and Batu getting behind the decks.

Sunday, September 2nd

The final batch of boat parties kick off with Hessle Audio hosting Ben UFO, Pangaea, Pearson Sound & Batu while Phonica Records celebrates its 15th anniversary with Palms Trax, Nick Williams and Danielle. The late afternoon boats will see Make Me enlist DJ Stingray, Anastasia Kristensen and Make Me to provide the music on the Adriatic while Exit Records provide the bass-heavy sounds of dBridge, Skeptical and Fixate alongside MCs SP:MC & MC GQ.

The last chance to get on a boat at Dimensions Festival in 2018 will be with Electrix Records who have Billy Nasty, LMA (DJ) and a special guest TBA signed up or Butter Side Up offering Craig Richards and Butter Side Up DJs.
