Tom Stephan, known to many as Superchumbo, is a dancefloor superhero born in New York and now based in London. The house DJ with a fondness for the tribal and twisted is the latest star to mix a Nervous Nitelife album, and he takes a collection of trendy tunes and bopping beats for a pounding audio ride.
This is Tom Stephan taking us on a ride through his tribal and twisted musical style, and it is one worth taking.
‘It’s nasty time’ according to the Nervous Disco Dolly’s on “Get Up”, Stephan’s opener, a sign he’s got his twisted head on from the outset. Sliding into the minimal fizz of Seductive’s “Underground Sound”, the menacing dirty bass of Robbie Rivera featuring Rooster & Peralta on “Move Move” pushes the mix into overdrive swiftly with Stephan’s own tune “Turn That Sh*t Up” likely to see you reaching to do just that. He drops in some rhythmic drumming from Rishi Romero and Afrojack, the latter’s “Polkadots” addictively fidgety, then sets off on a more minimal mid-section including Christian Arango’s “Body Shake” and Spiritmindster’s “Furious Night”.
For the final third Stephan aligns himself with producer-of-the-moment Diplo with his own remix of “Keep It Going Louder” by Diplo’s side project with Switch, Major Lazor along with Diplo’s remixes of Bingo Players “Get Up” and Stephan’s “Turn That Sh*t Up”. Diplo’s percussive stylings also blend some acid house into the mix before Oscar G provides a vocal finale with “What You Need”. It rounds out a fun-filled mix which has a clear focus on driving beats into your ears and infecting your brain. It’s a tad lacking in invention at times, but as a whole this is Tom Stephan taking us on a ride through his tribal and twisted musical style, and it is one worth taking.
