It’s been a year since we last featured anything about Star Chamber, and what a year it has been. We predicted that 2006 would bring them closer to their ultimate goal of getting a recording contract and recognition for their powerful, guitar-led sound and it proved accurate. They finished as one of three runners-up to New Rhodes for the Kerrang! Live Unsigned Act, and are looking to build on that success with a new two-part EP, the first of which is the aptly named Part One, and a fitting testament to their ever-joyful sound.

Its funk-filled groovy basslines and mellow tune allowing lead singer Al to take us on a tender journey that is U2 at their most heartfelt and uplifting.

Back when they had some of their early demo recordings aired on Virgin Radio, it was clear they had the potential to make their mark and have continued to write songs beautiful in their simplicity like The Cardigans at times, yet possessing all the power of classic acts such as The Pixies and T-Rex at others. The raucous riffs of opening track “Radio Edit” signal a band demanding the attention they deserve: you would be hard pushed to cut anything out of this edit! Track two, the full-blown rock of “Casual Acquaintances”, has stabbing guitar rhythms The Smashing Pumpkins would have been proud of driving it towards a dramatic end. “Landmarks” possesses funk-filled groovy basslines and mellow tune allowing lead singer Al to take us on a tender journey that is U2 at their most heartfelt and uplifting. Final track “Greedy Pig” starts off slow and softly, gently teasing us with slight strums of the guitar and then sets off on an energetic stompy mid section before putting the brakes on to give us a deserved rest.

Star Chamber have always been a great party-vibes band and with Part One they have given us plenty to get excited about in a recording and to look forward to in Part Two. You can always be sure Star Chamber will supply you with a moment to get your arm punching the air with your fist clenched, bouncing around like a loon. You may not look too cool doing it in your bedroom, but no one’s to know, are they?
