Formed by Tim Soete and Josh Smith nearly fifteen years ago before being joined by former Nation of Ulysees guitarist Tim Green a few years later The Fucking Champs rocked-out for about a decade, then replaced Josh Smith with Phil Manley, then rocked-out some more, including at Mars Volta’s ATP. The band’s set was slightly delayed due to a fire alarm and the ensuing evacuation of the entire main venue, the brief wait in the outside rain just dampened me slightly, but The Fucking Champs, riff-metal storm drenched me completely.

palm-muted distortions, heavy “licks”, classic rock beats, math-riffs, technical ability and hero key changes

The band play raging riff-heavy, cock-metal, generally without vocals, in fact most of the time it seems that they’ve added extra riffs instead of vocals. The band survive as drums and guitars without a bassist because the ultimate classic metal harmonies that the twin guitars perform provide all the notation that is necessary.

This ATP show was an awesome set and delivered the necessary amount of palm-muted distortions, heavy “licks”, classic rock beats, math-riffs, technical ability and hero key changes. And lets not forget Tim Soete’s great vocals when he does sing, and the band become pure rock line-up. To look at them you’d not expect their brand of heavy riffery, but to actually get to look at them playing it was absorbing and fun.
