Florence-based shoegaze band We Melt Chocolate is Vanessa (lunar voice and synth), Lorenzo (psycho guitar), Baro (melt guitar), Marco Crowley (heavy bass) and Posel (light drum). Back in June they released their debut album led by single ‘Everjoy’. We caught up with the band to find out more.

We all love chocolate, melted or not.

First up, tell us bit about yourselves - who are We Melt Chocolate, and what were you doing before making music together?
WMC are Vanessa, Enrico, Marco, Posel, Lorenzo. Before making music together we actually were making music together, Lorenzo, Marco and Vanessa in Evanicetrip, then Lorenzo, Enrico, Posel and Marco in Shades of Blue.

Who did you take inspiration from?
I take inspiration from everyday life and especially from how to escape it. Musically from psychedelia.

Why the name ‘We Melt Chocolate’? What do you stand for?
We all love chocolate, melted or not.

How would you describe your musical style?
Shoegaze, dream pop, post punk, wave, psych.

If you could collaborate with any living artist, who would you love to work with?
I’d love to work with Brian Eno, and would love to collaborate with Alan Moulder for the guitar sound.

Your debut album is the eponymously-titled We Melt Chocolate. When did you write it and where did you record it?
We wrote the album practising, jamming together during the last few years.

How does the album build your style?
Our style comes naturally, we didn’t plan to sound this way. Probably that is the only way we can play.

Why did you decide to make your debut album self-titled?
We couldn’t decide for a title, so we didn’t choose. I think that first album has to be titleless.

Can you talk us through each track?
‘Let Go’ is a slow number very intense sense of nostalgia for the future.

‘12 Hours’ is our tour de force, many styles all included in one song.

‘Everjoy’ a very well built song that mixes pop and tension.

‘Blue hair Girl’ is an old number that has changed along the way, lyrics and vocal melody completely changed from the original version.

‘Wishful’ is another slow number full of tension that is released in the end.

‘Space Girl’ and ‘Orange Sky’ are the oldest songs, more poppy still psychedelic, both influenced by the cure in my opinion (Lorenzo), somehow.

‘Golden Eyes’ is for all the broken hearted (Vanessa).

What are your hopes for ‘We Melt Chocolate’?
Our hope is to be appreciated and reach as many people as possible.

What are your other plans for 2019, can we catch you on tour?
We hope to tour in Europe and the rest of the world soon.

Finally, if you could go back in time and give yourselves one piece of advice, when would it be and what would you say?
Back in time I would try to avoid a few things but experience comes with time (Lorenzo).

I would love to collaborate with Jason Pierce (Vanessa).
