English rock band Sweet Crisis was formed in Cambridge to play guitar-driven rock and roll. Singer Leo Robarts and guitarist Piers Mortimer write the songs with a bond that dates back to when the pair were just six years old. More recently they recruited drummer Dave Cullen and enlisted session bassist Peter Martin to provide studio sounds, going on to record an album due for release later this year. We caught up with Leo and Piers to find out more about their long-standing friendship that evolved into being bandmates.
First up, tell us bit about yourselves - what were you all doing before you started making music?
We were listening to music, it’s all we know.
What was the first style or genre of music you really got into?
Rhythm and blues and of course rock and roll.
Was there a particular song or artist who inspired you?
Free - ‘Fire And Water’ and The Stones.
Tell us when you realised you wanted to get involved in making music
and playing tunes to people?
We both grew up playing guitar with our dads and when we met we realized we shared a love for rock and blues music in common. I remember listening to Free’s ‘Fire And Water” – we were blown away and decided then that’s what we wanted to do.
If you could go back in time and give yourself one piece of advice
that day, what would it be?
Trust your own instincts and don’t listen to people who try to manipulate you into doing what they want, not what you want… if that makes sense?
Songs often come at times when they are least expected.
How do you set about writing tunes? Is there a common starting point
for all your work?
We sometimes write them together but other times one of us has idea that we work on it until it’s ready to be shared with the rest of the boys. Writing should never be forced; songs often come at times when they are least expected.
If you music was a person, how would you describe their personality and where would they live?
That’s probably the most original question we’ve ever been asked! Errrr… I guess a weird combination of the three of us, I’m not sure how that would work but he’d live in a grimy flat in L.A, just of Venice Beach.
What are your top three “must haves” while you’re on tour?
1. Hummus and cinnamon bagels… done.
What have you been listening to this year so far?
Piers: Daft Punk and Hozier. Leo: Humble Pie and Donnie Hatheway.
Do you have any pre-set rituals?
A band huddle before we go on stage and plenty of Jack Daniels.
What was the most significant moment of 2014 for you and why?
Forming the band and getting to record the album.
What have you been listening to this year? Can you give us a top three records of 2015 so far?
New artists this year: 1 Hozier 2 Royal Blood 3 Sam Smith
If you could collaborate with any living artist, who would it be?
Easy: Keith Richards.
How is the rest of 2015 shaping up for you? Where can we see you play?
There are lots of gigs to be announced after we drop the single on the 31st of July. We’re planning a nation wide tour soon. All of the information will be on our website sweetcrisis.com.
