Tom Hale has spent the last six months writing and recording his debut EP In The Night set for release on Friday, July 7th. We spoke to the Barnsley singer/songwriter about his new material.

Most recently I’ve been writing as I’ve been recording, it can stem from a riff or melody and I’ll do that as a guide then build on top of it.

What was the first style or genre of music you really got into? Was there a particular song or artist who inspired you?
I’ve always listened to music from a young age but I guess it would have to be the whole classic rock thing. I remember listening to a lot of Thin Lizzy and ACDC.

Can you remember the first song you wrote that you were really proud of? What was it about?
The first song I wrote I think I was probably 6 and it was called ‘That Girl’, there’s a tape of it somewhere. Very embarrassing.

How do you write your music? Is there any kind of routine that helps?
There’s a few ways I suppose, you can never tell though because if you’re in no rush they just come to you. Most recently I’ve been writing as I’ve been recording, it can stem from a riff or melody and I’ll do that as a guide then build on top of it.

Describe your style in five words.
Melodic, soundtrack, alternative guitar music.

You’ve previously fronted bands such as ROOD. What did you learn from those experiences?
I learnt so much from those experiences, the main thing was probably how hard it can be to make it in this type of business.

Tell us about your debut EP ‘In The Night’. What’s it about?
It tells a story of a man falling in love in his dreams. The title track was actually the first song I wrote so I ended up writing it backwards. Although I wrote the story, I do like to leave it open for interpretation as some people I know have asked me questions if it’s about this or that which I think is pretty cool.

Did you face any challenges writing it?
Half way through writing it I started to struggle, I felt as if I was forcing myself to get something recorded. When I listened back, it sounded like trash so I sat on it for a couple of months and the other songs just flowed.

What are your hopes for the EP?
My main hope is that people like it, I haven’t had a bad comment as of yet so I’m buzzing to get the full thing out. I know it won’t be huge but it’s my first release and you have to start somewhere. I wanna be the best and as big as I can be.

Where can we see you live in 2017?
I haven’t got any gigs booked yet as I’m currently getting my new band together, we’ve rehearsed a few times and it’s sounding big but I want to make sure we’re ready before we go on the road. It’ll probably be after the summer.

If you could collaborate with any living artist, who would it be?
Probably Alexandra Saviour or badbadnotgood, I’ve been listening to a lot of them recently.

If you could have written one song by another artist, what would it be?
Something by The Beatles.

Finally, if you could wish for one thing to happen in 2017, what would it be?
Hopefully to get on a management, then a record label.
