Indie-pop trio The Tailormade made a name for themselves, and won praise from celebrities, while busking in tube stations across London. They’ve just release the quirky visuals for their latest single ‘Mr Perfect’, and we caught up with the band to find out more about their music career so far.
The Tailormade was born whilst drinking a few beers in a Wetherspoons.
First up, tell us bit about yourselves - what led you all to forming The Tailormade?
We were all friends at University and we liked jamming together. Naturally, we started doing the odd gig for free beer and open mic night and next thing The Tailormade was born.
Who did your take inspiration from?
We loved Ed Sheeran, Rizzle Kicks, The Streets and Jamie T. Real fun, upbeat British music.
How would you describe your musical style?
It’s indie Brit Pop. More British that Brit like Oasis.
Why the name ‘The Tailormade’?
We liked putting our own versions of covers making them Tailormade. Then The Tailormade was born whilst drinking a few beers in a Wetherspoons.
You’ve busked in tube stations across London. What kind of responses did you get?
We get an amazing response, we managed to survive off just busking underground for a while but we did use to sing for about four hours a day.
What did you take from that experience?
We really got to practise our craft and work out our style. Busking was great for trying out new material.
You’ve got fans in Gary Lineker, XFM’s Phil Clifton and Emma Thompson - how did you find out they were enjoying your music?
Well, Gary Linekars tweeted us because we were doing stuff with Get Sung music and he enjoyed an original we did. We did a lot with Phil Clifton through busk in London and Emma put a few quid in our case when we were busking. Pretty random, but so cool.
You’ve supported Olly Murs, Madness, Jess Glynne, Mullally and Tom Jones. What did you learn from each of them?
They all know how to put on a show. Whether it was with a full brass section or just them they know how to entertain. That’s where we wanna be.
You’ve just finished your first UK tour - The Coffee House Sessions. What was the concept?
We went around different university’s popping up and doing an acoustic set. It was dead cool.
What were the highlights?
We got to meet so many wicked students and get our new music out there.
Your latest single was ‘Mr Perfect’. What’s it about?
We had a friend that always seemed to go for rotten blokes and thought that was a fab concept for a tune. We started it a few years ago and finished it last year. We knew it was gonna be our first single.
The video is a quirky visual feast. Who did you work on it with?
We worked with a friend Chelsey Clarke who did an amazing job. She took our vision and made it work. We’re perfectionists so probably did her head in a bit but it’s had an amazing response.
Are you pleased with the results?
So happy and everyone that’s watched it seems to have loved it.
What kind of response has the single and video received?
It’s gone down really well on Spotify and Vevo. We can’t wait to release more music and content.
Finally, if you could wish for one thing to happen to the band this year, what would it be?
We’re hoping to do a huge London headline show so selling that out would be a dream.
