The Lows is a new hard rock band from Detroit made up of Angelo Coppola (founder/lead vocals/guitar), Nick Behnan (guitar/vocals), Brandon McNall (guitar), Wolf (bass) and Duane Hewins (drums). Their latest single, ‘Love Xtinction’ is from their forthcoming release The Love Sessions produced by Grammy Award winning producer/engineer Chuck Alkazian (Soundgarden, Pop Evil) and recorded at the Pearl Sound Studios. We caught up with Angelo to find out more.

We like to call it supersonic groove rock.

First up, tell us about yourselves - what led you teaming up as The Lows?
It started as a solo project with young singer/songwriter/multi-instrumentalist Angelo Coppola, after the break up of a recent band, decided to forge ahead into the studio with a slew of songs he had written. On the first EP Coppola wrote all the songs, played all the drums, sang all vocals, and played rhythm guitar.

He recruited phenomenal Detroit bassist Wolf and from those early demo recordings and he recruited two amazing guitarists Nick Behnan and Brandon McNall. Dynamic drummer Duane Hewins was brought in on drums as Coppola wished to front the band rather than be the drummer/lead singer like he’d done in the past.

Who do your take inspiration from?
We get inspiration for songs through life experiences. Mostly from feelings that you get just living life. We get motivated to improve as musicians from great recordings and from memorable live performances of other artists. Hearing a great record or seeing a stunning live performance just gets the creative fire burning.

Why the name ‘The Lows’?
The name The Lows came about when Coppola decided he wanted to release the first EP with a band name instead of a solo artist name even though he had done the majority of the recording himself. The Lows actually came Coppola’s first name Ange-lo as he had a few friends that called him Lo.

How would you describe your musical style?
We like to call it supersonic groove rock. Our songs usually have a groove to them and we like to fuse a traditional hard rock feel with modern production values. Big guitar, heavy riffs, and catchy hooks are usually present.

If you could collaborate with any living artist or band, who would you choose?
Would love to collaborate with Dave Grohl. Love his energy and creative drive. Constantly creating. He’s got a great knowledge of the history of pop and rock music, is an experienced filmmaker, and knows about production and the recording process. Extremely well rounded guy.

Tell us about your new single ‘Love Xtinction’, what’s it about?
It’s from a view point of seeing love disappear in the world. Like an endangered animal is close to becoming extinct, at times it seems as if love could be considered an endangered species.

When did you write ‘Love Xtinction’, and where did you record it?
The song was actually written a few years ago by Coppola and he never thought his home demos did the song justice. He chose to record it with Grammy Award winning producer Chuck Alkazian at the world famous Pearl Sound Studios in Canton, MI. The Lows first EP was recorded there and also produced by Alkazian. It was a great chemistry on the The Lows EP so it was a no brainer when it came to the next single.

How does ‘Love Xtinction’ build on your style?
It definitely encapsulates what The Lows are about musically. Down & dirty grooves, memorable guitar riffs, a heavy beat, emotional vocals, a catchy hook, and a big dynamic production sound.

What are your hopes for ‘Love Xtinction’?
We hope it becomes the #1 rock song of the year. Haha, but not even kidding.

What other plans do you have for the year?
This month we have some awesome festival shows lined up all around Michigan with Sugar Ray, The Verve Pipe, and Sponge. They are some great festivals that will keep us in front of some huge audiences. We also plan on releasing another single late summer and doing some shows branching out regionally in the Midwest US.

Finally, if you could go back in time and give yourselves one piece of advice, when would it be and what would you say?
Never underestimate yourself. You are the only one that can hold you back from doing what you enjoy. Would also say to really cherish and enjoy the experiences along the way to achieving your goals.
