London-based musician Sweeney, aka Todd Holdsworth, has been perfecting his craft over the last three years, and has collaborated with producer and writer KZ (Wretch 32, Emeli Sande) on his debut single ‘Save Me’. We caught up with Sweeney to find out more about his first release.
It’s like London’s version of alternate RnB peppered with power chords.
First up, tell us a bit about yourself - what first got you into music?
My Dad is a guitarist… so growing up there was always some sort of studio in the house. That led me to making music pretty early on, even if it was pretty awful!
Were there any particular bands or artists you took inspiration from?
I love the UK scene for music. People like Raleigh Ritche, Zak Abel, Wretch 32, Lewis Capaldi.
How would you describe your style?
I always find that difficult to answer, but I guess it’s like London’s version of alternate RnB peppered with power chords. Normal.
Well my first name is Todd… and my parents were in musicals. So yeah, thug life. Haha.
If you could collaborate with any living artist, who would you choose?
Anyone SUPER famous. I’m in this purely for money. 😉
Tell us about your debut single ‘Save Me’. What’s it about?
‘Save Me’ is basically a bit of a self indulgent cry for help. It was written at a time when I really had no right to be moaning publicly. So me and KZ (my producer) decided it sat better with a bassline!
When did you write it, and where did you record it?
It was written a while back… in north London at The Chocolate Factory.
How does ‘Save Me’ represent your style?
In terms of music… I’ve always said I just want to make people feel. I was lucky enough to have KZ on side for production, and then my Dad on guitar which, for me… is a pretty naughty combo.
What’s been the reaction to ‘Save Me’?
The reaction has been unreal. Especially the support from my closest. It’s tough getting music out there as a brand new artist, so i’m proper chuffed with the response!
What other plans do you have for the rest of the year?
Get cracking with the EP! My main focus is just to make sure when it is all said and done, I’m truly happy with whats out there.
Finally, if you could wish for one thing to happen for you this year, what would it be?
Win the EuroMillions? Nando’s Black Card? Failing that… I’d love to support someone. I just wanna do gigs!
