Sub Blue is back with his latest release, ‘Russian Roulette’ - a slice of chilled out, alternative and introspective RnB. We caught up with Sub Blue to find out more.
I wrote ‘Russian Roulette’ after I seen one of my friends going through something quite dark, and they felt the need to drink and take drugs to take away the pain, instead of talking it through.
First up, tell us a bit about yourself - what first got you into music?
My name is Sub Blue, I’m an artist / musician from Liverpool. I first got into music from a young age, my parents were always very creative; my mum with art and my dad with rapping and making music. I think I was aways going to be into something creative.
**Were there any particular bands or artists you took inspiration from? **
Yeah most definitely, I take a lot of my inspiration from Frank Ocean and The Weeknd, growing up I listened to a lot of Michael Jackson and The Red Hot Chilli Peppers.
How does the name ‘Sub Blue’ relate to your style?
The name relates to the theme and vibe of music - what I call Suburban Blues - I’m reflecting on mine and my friends’ experiences.
If you could collaborate with any living artist, who would it be?
Frank Ocean for sure.
Tell us about your new single ‘Russian Roulette’. What’s it about?
I wrote ‘Russian Roulette’ after I seen one of my friends going through something quite dark, and they felt the need to drink and take drugs to take away the pain, instead of talking it through. I guess the overall topic is about someone who’s literally playing russian roulette with their life, and they aren’t afraid of the consequence whatever that may be.
When did you write it and where did you record it?
I wrote ‘Russian Roulette’ in June last year after just getting back home from a trip from away. I think being away - that specific time - really opened my eyes to some of the things people go through. I recorded the it in XamVolo’s studio in Liverpool - who produced the record.
How does ‘Russian Roulette’ build on your previous releases?
It definitely adds a lot more to the story - the response so far has been super crazy. In fact it adds to the previous release as my forthcoming EP is made up of four songs which go together to tell a story. The videos all piece together too.
Incisive & Caleb Femi feature on ‘Russian Roulette’. What did they bring to the single?
They both added such a deeper insight into the story, I was super happy when we got a feature from the both of them.
‘Russian Roulette’ was produced by fellow Liverpudlian and long-time collaborator XamVolo. How did that come about?
I met Xam a few years back when we were both a part of the LIMF Academy and then he signed to the same management as me and we built a relationship. I’ve always looked up to him like a big brother; he’s helped me learn a lot about myself as a person and an artist.
What are your hopes for ‘Russian Roulette’?
I’m just hoping that people can connect with the message of the song and if it can help someone who’s going through a rough time to speak to someone then I feel like I’ve contributed my bit.
Finally, if you could wish for one thing to happen for you this year, what would it be?
I think for this year to get a really cool support tour slot would be awesome.
