Roni released new EP “Nothing Less Than This” in May, marking her return from a break from music and a move into the country/Americana genre. In the coming months she has solo gigs and also a show with a full live backing band in Exeter. We caught up with Roni to find out more about her latest single “Baby Bird” and how she’s found stepping back into the music industry after devoting all her time to raising her children.

I want to bring people into ‘Roniland’ and have a good look around!

2016 - what is your goal?
My goal for 2016 it to make myself heard! I want to bring people into ‘Roniland’ and have a good look around! Released the EP on May 23rd, the single Baby Bird is due out on 29th July and I am also still in and out of the studio recording my album which will be released in September.

Did you make any new year’s resolutions?
My only new year’s resolution was to work hard on pushing my music forward, finishing the production of the album really.. and starting this new journey!!

What was the biggest lesson you learnt in 2015?
The biggest lesson I learnt last year was that I was ready, soooo ready, my songs were developed enough for the EP, we did a bunch of gigs around Devon which went down really well, most of the set was my original material too. It was great to feel that everything was coming together… finally!!

What was the musical highlight of 2015?
The musical highlight was definitely recording the EP, we did the whole thing in a day!! The musicians I work with are the most amazing (musicians and as people) helpful and guiding, true friends!

Who are you excited to hear from in 2016?
I am most excited to hear Miranda Lambert’s new album which is rumoured for this year and there are a few other artists that I am kind of praying will feed me some ear candy this year but have yet to confirm what they are doing.

Tell us about the record you have just released…
Baby Bird is a song I wrote a few years ago about someone I knew that I was absolutely besotted with… the lyrics literally tell the story as it unfolded and what I was thinking at the time, so that is what it is about and what inspired it also… I wrote it in about 10 – 15 minutes!

If you had to pick three artists to be filed next, who would they be and why?
I think the three artists I would love to be filed next to would be Chris Stapleton, Brandi Carlisle and Tammy Wynette…

If the record were an animal, what animal would it be?
Well, if my record were an animal I guess it would have to be a baby bird!!! (the song is called “Baby Bird”!).

If you could jam with one artist alive or dead, who would it be?
If I could jam with one artist it would have to be Elvis!

If you could have written one song by another artist, what would it be?
The song I wish I had written would have to be “Beauty and the Beast” by Stevie Nicks. It’s the most beautiful haunting piece that is just so touching.

Someone is making a film of your life, who will play you?
If they were to make a film of my life.. wow, I guess a really young Cyndi Lauper!!

Lastly, tell us one thing you have never revealed in an interview…
Something never before revealed… well, I have nearly drowned three times!
