Italian-Welsh singer Regulus Red began writing music while waiting tables in Barcelona. Inspired by the likes of Lorde, Lady Gaga and Robyn, the rising star is hoping to make their mark with ‘Body Rock’. We caught up with Regulus Red to find out more.

Regulus means ‘prince’ in Latin, a royal, charming guide in the darkness. Red is the colour of love and of blood. Passion and rage. These words speak to me loud.

First up, tell us about yourself - what got you into music?
Music was always a safe haven for me. During the hardest times and the happiest times, music made me feel like I belonged. Then heartbreak came, and the only way to overcome the pain was to write about it. From that day onwards, I never stopped. And here we are.

Were there any particular bands or artists you took inspiration from?
I have many, yes. My fans know how dear Lady Gaga, Lorde, P!nk and MIKA are to me. Artists that kept writing for years, telling stories through music. Fierce, loud, colourful, funny, unique.

Why ‘Regulus Red’?
Regulus means ‘prince’ in Latin, a royal, charming guide in the darkness. Red is the colour of love and of blood. Passion and rage. These words speak to me loud.

How would you describe your musical style?
I would like to use these three words: volcanic, truthful, dynamic.

If you could collaborate with any living artist, who would it be?
I think Charli XCX would be an amazing artist to collaborate with. And Kim Petras, the way she makes pop, no one else does.

Tell us about your new single ‘Body Rock’. What’s the inspiration behind it?
‘Body Rock’ is the song that wants summer to last as long as possible. It’s a synthetic track that wants to rekindle the fire inside of us. I wrote it for me and for anyone who feels this way. I wanted to make people feel good about themselves and about life especially in these hard times!

When did you write it and where did you record it?
I wrote ‘Body Rock’ just before summer, in a London studio with my beloved friend and producer Future Humans.

How does ‘Body Rock’ represent your style?
It’s made of volcanic material, it doesn’t shy away from the truth and it makes you move, it doesn’t stop, it’s dynamic ;)

What are your hopes for ‘Body Rock’?
That it can reach those who feel like summer will never end. I would love for it to jump on some amazing Spotify Playlists, we’re working on it

How’s the rest of 2020 looking in what’s becoming a crazy year?
Well I’m glad you mention this: my debut EP is finally coming out in late October (Halloween times, not a coincidence, lol). It’s called Red Prince of the Night and it shines a light on my darkest side. Many songs on it speak of this darkness, of my secrets, of sacred places.

I also wrote a short story that will be available with the pre-order on Bandcamp which sets the atmosphere for the listening. I’m also planning an extra release around a Christmas time.. could it be a love song? We’ll see…

Finally, if you could go back in time and give yourself one piece of advice, when would it be and what would you say?
Make sure that you remember this: you are enough. So much time was spent by me thinking I was a failure or not vocally strong enough or lacking useful knowledge in the music industry. I’ve amended this by studying more and learning more, knowing inside that my art is enough. I am enough.
