Mollyanna use raw, distorted guitars, gritty synth and powerful vocals to produce rock music. THeir latest single is ‘Louder’ and they have live dates coming up in Sheffield and York. We spoke to the band to find out more about them.
‘Louder’ is about addiction and unhealthy obsessions.
2017 - what is your goal?
We’re back in the studio this year recording new singles/an EP and working on new tracks. We’re a DIY band so that means we do all the recording and producing ourselves. It’s a lot of work, but we wouldn’t have it any other way. We’re also playing festivals (already got a couple lined up, but we can’t brag about them just yet).
Did you make any new year’s resolutions?
I did yeah, but it was only to drink more water so not exactly exciting, ha.
What was the biggest lesson you learnt in 2016?
Not to try to please everybody - it’s impossible to make music that every single person in the world enjoys, or to play every gig that people ask you to do. Saying no is ok (and may prevent mental breakdowns).
What was the musical highlight of 2016?
For Mollyanna? I’m not sure I can choose really. We had some awesome support slots with Kate Jackson and Joseph, we also had our first headline show too and won an award for one of our tracks. It was a really busy year for us.
Who are you excited to hear from in 2017?
There are a couple of things - Incubus are releasing a new album, and I noticed that System of a Down are playing festival stages, so I’m hoping that means they’re planning on touring… that would be nice. Also one of my friends Jack, (aka Kid Conventional) is releasing his new EP so I can’t wait for that.
Tell us about the record you have just released…
‘Louder’ is about addiction and unhealthy obsessions. It’s the first track we wrote together in the new line up so we’re looking forward to sharing it.
If you had to pick three artists to be filed next to, who would they be and why?
I’d pick Paramore because Hayley Williams has an amazing voice, Incubus because they made me want to start a band, and Smashing Pumpkins just because I like them.
What inspired the record?
Poor mental health.
If the record were an animal, what animal would it be?
Define your sound in five words.
Dark, dramatic, uncompromising, loud, raw.
If you could jam with one artist alive or dead, who would it be?
Probably the Red Hot Chilli Peppers, those guys seem like a lot of fun and their music is filthy. I like that.
If you could have written one song by another artist, what would it be?
There are loads! But I think ‘Killing Me Softly’. I’ve always been rubbish at writing love songs myself.
Someone is making a film of your life, who will play you?
Lastly, tell us one thing you have never revealed in an interview.
I can’t get to sleep without watching Bob Ross.
