Dundee indie-pop quartet Model Aeroplanes are back with new single ‘Lover’ following their debut EP Something Like Heaven. We found out more about the band.
There are lots of crazy new sounds and songs floating about our studio right now.
First up, tell us bit about yourself - what led you to forming Model Aeroplanes?
We all met at high school and shared a common disinterest in academia and football. Therefore, we were left with no other option than to start a band.
You’re from Dundee. What’s the music scene like there?
Dundee is and always has been great for being the source of great musicians and bands. There used to be a lot of great venues, but that has decreased a little over the past few years. I’m sure it’ll get better again. Punters: go support live music otherwise you don’t have the right to moan about venues closing their doors.
Describe your style in five words.
Majestic, tribal, dream pop-funk.
Tell us about your new single ‘Lover’. What’s it about?
‘Lover’ is about a dysfunctional relationship where both parties want freedom to do as they please all the while expecting their partner to be exclusive to them. It’s a paradoxical tale of poisonous love.
How does it follow on from your debut EP ‘Something Like Heaven’?
We feel it’s more out of the box than the EP, but is still only a mere footstep in the direction that we are travelling in sonically. There are lots of crazy new sounds and songs floating about our studio right now.
What’s the response been to ‘Lover’ so far?
We’ve had a really amazing response so far. No one has thrown faeces at us, yet. We were a bit nervous as it’s first music we’ve released since our debut EP last year but it has gone down really well!
You’re played festivals across Europe. What’s been your highlights so far?
One of the best moments has to be opening the main stage at OpenAir Gampel, Switzerland. The lineup was us, Brian Fallon, Sum 41, Noel Gallagher then Biffy Clyro. Absolutely mental scenes.
Where can we see you live in 2017?
We’ve decided to focus more on the studio side of things this year but we will be playing a few select shows including a juicy headline show on 28th July at King Tuts as part of Summer Nights along with playing at the first year of Carnival 56 festival in our beloved Dundee.
If you could jam with one artist alive or dead, who would it be?
I think having a jam with Maurice White would have been well fun. He was a genius. Or the man himself, Stevie Wonder, that would be next incredible.
If you could have written one song by another artist, what would it be?
I [Grant] personally would love to have written Rock With You by MJ.
Finally, if you could wish for one thing to happen to the band in 2017, what would it be?
All we want to do is keep making music that is more and more different from anything else around and to continue to push sonic boundaries. Also we’d love to get a Wurlitzer Electric piano. That would be quite lovely.
