We chat to Stephan and Jeffrey of London-based pop/R&B duo Misunderstood armed with a video for double-a single ‘Sucker/Imma Do My Thang’.
No matter what set backs you may have, always remember you can breakthrough anything and keep moving forward.
2016 - what will you look back on most fondly from the year?
S: Creating our current project and being able to play my first ever lead role in a Universal picture movie.
J: For me writing and creating our songs and shooting our music videos.
What was the biggest lesson you learnt in 2016 so far?
J: No matter what set backs you may have, always remember you can breakthrough anything and keep moving forward.
What was the musical highlight of 2016?
S: Being able to create an album full of records that you absolutely adore.
J: And also bringing the songs to life by shooting our music videos.
Who are you excited to hear from in 2017?
Both: Zara Larsson.
J: We love how confident she is with her performances and music videos, I’ve seen her live and she’s just such an amazing performer and artist.
Tell us about the record you have just released…
S: Whilst creating our current project, we felt from listening back to the songs ‘Sucker’ and ‘Imma Do My Thing’ showcased the complete left and complete right of Misunderstood. Whereas the rest of the project showcases us as a whole. ‘Sucker’ brings the throwback 90’s R&B vibe that we love and ‘Imma Do My Thang’ has that crazy retro feel that’s a part of us. We thought using both singles would give us a great intro for whats to come.
If you had to pick three artists to be filed next to, who would they be and why?
J: Hmmmm well for me it would have to be Michael Jackson-because he is just the king! Such a game changer and sooooo iconic, his music and videos told so much more than just playing a song or doing the video to accompany it. There was so much thought behind it which has helped change the worlds idea and thoughts on how music should be consumed.
S: I’d say Beyonce. From being in Destiny’s Child to coming out on her own and being the goddess of female music today I think what she has done for music is incredible. The one thing I respect is that she has found a way to just be herself, be a role model for guys and girls and again change the way music should be released; and just be a total boss!
Both: Our final one we’d say is Missy Elliott. There is no other female rapper that comes up with crazy visuals, beats and mad lyrics like her especially her earlier stuff. She’s respected worldwide for being diverse and not being generic with her work, she always makes you think outside of the box and you can never guess what she’s coming out with next.
What inspired the records?
J: We’ve released and recorded so much in the past, these two singles show the growth of Misunderstood; like the saying from Boys to Men.
If the record were an animal, what animal would it be?
S: ‘Sucker’ would have to be a cat, lol. ‘Imma Do My Thang’ would be a lion.
Define your sound in five words…
Loud, fun, cheeky, futuristic and sexual.
If you could jam with one artist alive or dead, who would it be?
J: Michael Jackson.
If you could have written one song by another artist, what would it be?
J: Mine would be “If I Were A Boy” by Beyonce. I admired the writing on it and remember when i first heard it and was like “why didn’t i think of this!” I love how its talking about switching rolls and speaking on situations and examples of our everyday behaviours in or out of relationships. Bey kills it vocally which also adds that special something to it!
S: ‘Quiet’ from Matilda the Musical. I can’t listen to this song without crying, lol.
Someone is making a film of your life, who will play you?
J: Ahhhhh, that’s hard as the actors I would like to play me are way older than me lol.. I don’t know but having watched the New Edition biopic that’s just been released I would love to find one of the young actors in there that could play me. But I don’t know that’s a tricky one.
Lastly, tell us one thing you have never revealed in an interview…
J: Me and Beyonce are secretly married and all the songs on Lemonade were really about me not Jay-Z.
S: I love Cake.
