Londoner Mike Watson makes guitar-based pop music that mixes acoustic and electric guitar. He’s just released new single ‘Lying for Love’, and we caught up with him to find out more.
If I lose my voice, I’m in all sorts of trouble!
2016 - what will you look back on most fondly from the year?
I moved down to London at the end of 2015 so I really enjoyed getting to know the city and all it has to offer. I love the fact no matter what time of the day it is, or what day of the week it is, you can always find something to do.
Did you make any new year’s resolutions?
Funnily enough, it was actually to take better care of my voice. Simple things like having ginger and honey drinks when I wake up, or not going out a few days before a studio session make such a difference. If I lose my voice, I’m in all sorts of trouble!
What was the biggest lesson you learnt in 2016 so far?
Patience and the fact everything happens for a reason. I think when you sit back and realise that it takes so much stress off of you. Stress is not helpful to anyone.
What was the musical highlight of 2016?
The musical highlight for me was when One Republic released their album ‘Oh My My’ in October. I’m a massive fan of theirs and of Ryan Tedder as a writer. It was their first album since 2013, so I was very excited for it!
What is your musical highlight of 2017 so far?
It has to be releasing my debut single ‘Lying For Love’. I’ve had the song for a while so to keep it quiet and sit on it was tough. But now it’s out I’m really excited for everyone to hear it!
Who are you excited to hear from in 2017?
I’m a massive Maroon 5 fan, and having been fortunate enough to go on tour with them has enhanced that tenfold! I hear their latest album is literally on the horizon so I’m buzzing for that! They are yet to release a bad album, and long may that continue!
Tell us about the record you have just released…
I wrote ‘Lying For Love’ with a great producer and friend of mine in Brighton a while back. We knew instantly as soon as we got into the song we had something we both felt a connection to, and as a writer that’s pretty special. Although it’s personal to me, I think 99.9% of the world can relate to falling for someone they probably shouldn’t have, so it’s nice to think people can relate to it wherever or whoever they may be.
If you had to pick three artists to be filed next to, who would they be and why?
Justin Bieber - The new records Bieber have put out have been smashes… so to be alongside him would mean I’m hopefully doing something right. He’s really matured as an artist and you can tell that in his music with the more EDM influenced pop route he’s taken. I think he has a great vocal tone and control over his voice too.
Zayn - Similar to Bieber in the fact I genuinely like his music a lot. His track ‘Like I Would’ was on repeat on my playlist for a good few months, in fact it still is a year or two later. It has that timeless feel good vibe to it. Once again, to be alongside such an established artist as him would be pretty awesome.
Khalid - He’s a reasonably young up and coming singer from the States. I first heard him only a few months ago, but his track ‘American Teen’ has been my track of the summer so far. I’ve heard he’s a great writer and a great guy so to be up there next to him would be nice to see.
What inspired the record?
I tried to write the track based off personal experiences, but the fact that anyone can relate to it made the song come about quite naturally. I never had to worry about whether anyone would get where I was coming from lyrically as falling for the wrong person is a pretty common thing.
If the record were an animal, what animal would it be?
Probably something with a soft side but a bit of a bite too should they need it.. Maybe a lion… They can be calm and compassionate, but mess them about and they’ll suffer no fools.
Define your sound in five words…
Rich, Hooky, Electric, Modern, Pop.
If you could jam with one artist alive or dead, who would it be?
Wow that’s tough….. Only one? It’d have to be Michael Jackson wouldn’t it. That voice was something from another planet and we’ll never see anything like it ever again. Don Henley, Keith Richards, Johnny Cash, Noel Gallagher, Ryan Tedder and Chris Martin run him pretty close though.. 😉
If you could have written one song by another artist, what would it be?
Once again… an impossible question which genuinely a different answer every day.. As I’ve already mentioned MJ i’ll stay clear of one of his may hits. So maybe, although not one of the biggest songs of all time but definately one of, if not my favourite is ‘I Can See Clearly Now’ originally written and recorded by Johnny Nash. It has to be the most positive song ever. If you’re ever feeling down, put it on and you’ll be right as rain in no time.
Someone is making a film of your life, who will play you?
It’s got to be Jared Leto or Brad Pitt. I’ll go with Leto because of the musical connection! He may put me to shame with his vocals though.. What a star!
Lastly, tell us one thing you have never revealed in an interview…
I’m a complete insomniac! I go to bed at say 11pm and won’t fall asleep until 4/5am sometimes. It’s very very frustrating.
