Nigerian-born, London-based Mike Maro uses his music to tackle issues such as women’s rights, heartbreak and loss, he aims to redefine the rap culture. On his latest release ‘The Catch Up’, he’s taken Drake’s ‘0-100’ beat and given it a refresh with his own lyrical style. We chatted about his inspiration and style.

2pac’s music really made me think about things that matter in life. About saying what is real.

**Tell us bit about yourself - what were you doing before making music? **
For as long as I can remember I have been in education. I’ve worked various jobs as well, e.g. being a charity fundraiser, hospitality staff, a recruitment consultant.

You take inspiration from 2Pac. What impact did his music have on you?
2pac’s music really made me think about things that matter in life. About saying what is real. That’s why I try my hardest to create thought-provoking lyrics. To me that is forward thinking.

You use your music to tackle issues such as women’s rights, heartbreak and loss. What challenges does this present?
I try to see the challenges of talking about such issues as more of a benefit because it makes me come to terms with the reality of the situation and take a strong hold on it. That is, being able to overcome my inhibition and becoming an artist that is free to speak on what matters most to me.

How do you set about writing tunes? Is there a common starting point?
There isn’t actually a common starting point. It could be an idea stemming from something that has happened or an emotion etc. Other times, it could be the force of the instrumental creating the song.

Tell us about your new single “The Catch Up”. What’s it about?
In a nutshell, it is about coming from a place which isn’t that great or at best mediocre and finally having this epiphany of not settling. So then you do everything in your position to proceed to the next level but this song also reflects on my past and how it has shaped the person I am now.

Tell us about your new single “The Catch Up”. What’s it about?
0-100 chorus is an anthem and I felt it is only right to put my little twist on it before I told my story on The Catch Up.

What response has the single received?
I have had the best reactions out of people lately. And I am blessed to have people that support me and tell me the truth when they see it.

What’s next up for you this year?
I am always working and so I have a couple ideas I believe can hold me for this year. They include more tracks, with visuals.

What would make 2017 a successful year in your eyes?
A successful 2017 will be one where I have been prolific and have connected with more people through my music.

Finally, if you could go back in time and give yourself one piece of advice, when would you go back to and what would you say?
This is a good question lol. I would go back to when I had my heart broken in my second year and tell myself that that was an invaluable lesson to learn that was going to make me the better person I am today.
