Lyrical Strangers is Phil Chamberlin from Manchester and Mark Anthony from London. Their debut single, ‘Brand New Day’, is out now. We caught up with them to find out more about the band, their first release and plans for 2020.
‘Brand New Day’ is a very positive song and as a person, I always try and have a positive mindset in life.
First up, tell us bit about yourselves - who are Lyrical Strangers, and what were you doing before making music together?
Lyrical Strangers are the producer and multi-instrumentalist Phil Chamberlin and myself. Before we started making music together, Phil was making and producing music from his studio in Cardiff and I was in a music group called The Meds Collective for a few years when I was younger and since then, I’ve mainly been working as a solo artist, as well as collaborating with other artists.
Who did you take inspiration from?
It was basically Phil who started the project back in February 2019, as he was looking for a vocalist to work with and make music together. It was only when we had a number of tracks written and recorded, we decided to take it a step further and make an album.
Why the name ‘Lyrical Strangers’? What do you stand for?
The meaning behind the name “Lyrical Strangers”, was because we were complete strangers, who came together purely for the purpose of making music. After thinking of a name for a little while, someone suggested the name to me and when I suggested it to Phil, he liked it, so we went with it.
How would you describe your musical style?
I’d describe our music as a mixture of alternative, electro and hip-hop music; however, there are also some rock and dubstep influences on the album, so it is a real mixture of styles.
If you could collaborate with any living artist, who would you love to work with?
The hip-hop group Digable Planets. They do a great job of mixing hip-hop and jazz, with great lyrics. Their first album is one of my favourite albums, which I still listen to today.
Your debut single is ‘Brand New Day’. When did you write it and where did you record it?
‘Brand New Day’ was written and recorded around March 2019. The music was created at Phil’s own studio in Cardiff and the lyrics were recorded at my studio (Studio 35) in St Albans.
The whole album was recorded between March and April 2019 between the two studios.
How does ‘Brand New Day’ represent you?
I feel that ‘Brand New Day’ is a very positive song and as a person, I always try and have a positive mindset in life.
What are your hopes for ‘Brand New Day’?
Well we just hope that people like the song, as well as the album. I guess that’s all we can hope for really.
What are your other plans for 2020? Can we catch you on tour?
Our plans are to continue writing and recording music. We have no plans to tour at the moment, but that could change. I guess it depends if people like our music, hahaha.
Finally, if you could go back in time and give yourselves one piece of advice, when would it be and what would you say?
As long as the passion for music is there, keep going, but don’t ever believe the industry hype.
