Fado music, which I’ve been introduced to since I was little, lyrically talks of fate, desire, love and pain - I think and hope that has influenced my writing style!
First up, tell us bit about yourself - what first got you into music?
I’m an artist -songwriter from North West London, currently round Kentish Town. I always loved music since I was little and was in the school musicals, choirs etc… later I joined a hip hop group whilst doing my solo stuff too.
Were there any particular bands or artists you took inspiration from?
I loved Johnny Cash and tried to immerse myself into his writing, I loved TLC growing up and also Billie Holiday. Justin Timberlake had an amazing album he worked on with Pharrell: Justified. Queen and The Beatles.
How do you bring your Portuguese heritage into your sound?
There is Fado music, which I’ve been introduced to since I was little, which lyrically talks of fate, desire, love and pain - I think and hope that has influenced my writing style!
How would you describe your music?
If you could collaborate with any living artist, who would it be?
Wow, there are so many! Would love to combine styles with Billie Eilish or even Frank Ocean.
You’ve received airplay from Radio 1Xtra’s Toddla T on Target’s show and Radio 6’s Tom Robinson. What did that mean to you?
It’s amazing to get a nod from people who I respect so much and who have rich musical taste.
Tell us about your debut single ‘Have I Ever’. What’s it about?
It’s about questioning whether I’d ever really been in love… whether it was a genuine feeling, or taken on to run from loneliness. 🙁
When did you write it and where did you record it?
Wrote it in my room earlier this year and recorded it at Netil Studios in Hackney with my producer David Gledhill!
How does ‘Have I Ever’ represent your style?
There’s a mixture of elements, the classical harp, the hip hop punchy beat, the soulful vocals, I hope, and a popular appeal so that everyone can bop their head to it.
What kind of response have you had for ‘Have I Ever’?
It’s been good, people groove to it and it gets people dancing live!
What are your plans for 2019?
Write more, work with more people, do more shows, release more music!
Finally, if you could wish for one thing to happen for you next year, what would it be?
Mmmm… maybe go on tour…
