Newcomer Kritz93 won some early recognition in 2018 when DJ Target picked his team up with E.Mak, ‘Woah’ as his ͚Targo Embargo͛ BBC Radio 1Xtra in January. With the video just released and more releases to come throughout the year, we spoke to Kritz93.

I don’t think you can describe my style yet, we’re working on finding what it’s called, but sometimes I may sing with a reggae/afro tone and other times I may rap.

First up, tell us bit about yourself - what first got you into music?
I first started doing music at very young age, maybe even seven or eight. I used to see people perform on tv and I loved the confidence they showed and I thought to myself I want to be able to show that confidence.

Were there any particular bands or artists you took inspiration from when you were establishing your sound?
Growing up I listened to all UK artists at the time and pretty much took influences from all of them especially Ghetts and Dizzee Rascal, but I think I really found my sound when listening to Biggie, Bob Marley and Tory Lanez; those three in particular inspire my music the most.

How would you describe your style?
I don’t think you can describe my style yet, we’re working on finding what it’s called, but sometimes I may sing with a reggae/afro tone and other times I may rap.

You got a big break when DJ Target gave your single ‘Woah’ its first spin on BBC Radio 1Xtra and picked the record as his ‘Targo Embargo’. How did that come about?
Yeah that was big, I gotta shout out DJ Target for that. My songs have been floating around these days even in places I never expected to reach but thankfully it landed in DJ Target’s email at the right time, I hope he’s still supporting it haha.

What effect did that recommendation have?
It was the start of my song being played and supported on commercial radio like BBC Radio 1, Capital Xtra and Kiss FM which I think introduced it to listeners that it wouldn’t have reached before.

What’s been the response to the record and the music video which recently premiered on GRM Daily?
The response has been good you know, I have had a few artists reach out to me to know that they’re feeling and it’s made me realise that more people are starting to take an interest.

You collaborated and featured on a selection of tracks in 2017 including with E. Mak on ‘G’s Dem’ for DJ P Montana’s ‘Rah Boy - Vol 1’ mixtape. How did that collaboration come about?
P Montana shouted me to come studio because he was based there and was working on a mixtape, met E. Mak in the studio and it turned into a vibe, that’s how ‘G’s Dem’ came about.

What was it like working with E. Mak on ‘G’s Dem’ and ‘Woah’?
It’s pretty easy working with E. Mak as we knew of each other previously, so I think we know each others strengths and can appeal to that in our music.

What are your plans for 2018?
Continue to release music, make sure people know I’m here to stay and hopefully by the end of the year put out a body of work.
