Jack Woodward is a 24-year-old solo artist from north west England. He followed up single ‘Let it Happen’ with ‘Higher’ earlier this month ahead of the release of an EP in January 2018. We spoke to Jack about his music, his influences and the future.

It’s a song about connecting with the world that we live in and everything in it, or everything that is important to us.

2017 - what will you look back on most fondly from the year so far?
I think the songs and music that I’ve written and then developed and produced with my team in the studio has been the real treasured experience and something that has been full of challenges, but also huge private victories, rewards and growth for me as a writer and artist.

Did you make any new year’s resolutions at the outset of 2017?
To become the best songwriter in the world…. but I’ve given myself a full musical career to get there.

What was the biggest lesson you learnt in 2017 so far?
To balance things in life, a lot of the great and rewarding things (including making it as a successful singer-songwriter) can take time and therefore the journey / goal needs to be treated more as a marathon, not a sprint otherwise you may burn out. Treat myself as a human, not a productive robot.

What was the musical highlight of 2017?
Performing at Live at Leeds festival in April: an event which I have so many fond memories and experiences of as a spectator / attendee. So then getting to be in the performer /artist’s shoes on stage in front of a packed venue with so many attentive people.

Who are you excited to hear from in 2018?
I’d be very excited to hear from Huw Stevens telling me that my tracks are about to be played on Radio 1, I think that is the next goal to set my sights on.

Tell us about the record you have just released…
‘Higher’ is probably the best song (in terms of writing and production and sound) that I have to offer and I think it is a real development and milestone for me as a songwriter. It’s a song about connecting with the world that we live in and everything in it, or everything that is important to us. Not getting to caught up in our own day to day troubles of life and how somebody can make you appreciate life again and ‘see the light again’ as it were.

If you had to pick three artists to be filed next to, who would they be and why?
The Killers - the coolest sounding band I’ve ever heard with incredible emotions and memories that I associate with their music, they are a bit of a soundtrack to many moments in my life.

Bruce Springsteen - this guy has written so many amazing albums and songs and he is the chorus and anthem king (probably along with Freddie Mercury).

James Bay - he’s got it all, he writes amazing melodies and has real style and class and is very chilled and a very good looking guy too, there’s not much he can’t do.

What inspired the record?
I was inspired to begin again with my writing and really take it to a much better level and write the best possible music that I could, so it was probably the start of that push to seeing what I could do.

If the record were an animal, what animal would it be?
A very powerful, but graceful bird of prey (like a Golden Eagle) moving with determination and unwavering through the threat and testing elements.

Define your sound in five words…
Catchy, commercial, emotive, powerful, modern.

If you could jam with one artist alive or dead, who would it be?
John Mayer, the way he plays the acoustic and electric guitar is an incredible feat to watch, listen to and experience. I think I’d just play my very simple chords or rhythm pattern and let his melodies wash over them, he’d definitely be the star of the jam.

If you could have written one song by another artist, what would it be?
‘Another Love’ - Tom Odell

Someone is making a film of your life, who will play you?
Jim Carrey for the fun parts, Leonardo Dicaprio for the montages and narrating, and Tom Cruise and Robert Downey Jr. for the challenging parts and romantic dramas.

Lastly, tell us one thing you have never revealed in an interview…
I’ve put myself on a tight deadline to when I’ve got to be a made singer-songwriter (i.e. signed) or I’m out of the game and I’ll move on to something else.
