Artist/composer, pianist and vocalist Izzy Flynn is working on her first EP influenced by electronic, jazz, R&B, soul, hip hop and urban styles. She performs with The Abstract Orchestra - a hip hop big band - and has toured the UK with artists on the Nashville Songwriters tour 2013 and Patsy Cline Band tour. We found out how 2016 is shaping up for her.

Nina Simone performs a story with intense passion and fearlessness.

2016 - what is your goal?
Build my solo career; writing, performing, sharing music. Get stuck into some more artistic music videos; working with all kinds of artists/creatives.

Did you make any new year’s resolutions?
Work hard to achieve a lot. There should have been a longer list including: ‘eat more vegetables and less pick n mix’, or was it the other way around?

What was the biggest lesson you learnt in 2015?
A great team is invaluable; listen to them and listen to yourself.

What was the musical highlight of 2015?
Supporting Mos Def with Abstract Orchestra - a 20 piece hip hop Orchestra with rappers, vocalists, me on keys and BVs. Here’s a clip of us at the MOBOs Live Series:

Who are you excited to hear from in 2016?
Anyone who wants to have me on their TV show/ radio station.

Tell us about the record you have just released…
“Medicine” - the baseline is melodic and the harmony shifts subtly without really leaving a certain dark mood. It describes addiction, to people, to a lifestyle etc. The verses will try to seduce you; ‘take all of my Medicine’, while the chorus’ describe falling ‘a long waaayyy’ into a lifestyle that might be difficult to retire from.

If you had to pick three artists to be filed next to, who would they be and why?
Joni Mitchell - she’s an artist; musician and painter.

James Blake - he’s strongly rooted in beautiful harmony/melodies and current.

Nina Simone - she performs a story with intense passion and fearlessness.

What inspired the record?
Thoughts around addiction, in its various guises.

If the record were an animal, what animal would it be?
A black panther.

Define your sound in five words…
Melodic, rich, dark, electronic RnB.

If you could jam with one artist alive or dead, who would it be?
Joni Mitchell, I’d ask her about her painting too, and why she says its easier to be less critical when surrounded by her paintings than her music.

If you could have written one song by another artist, what would it be?
A song by another artist that I greatly appreciate is “Retrograde” - James Blake. It’s a beautifully and cleverly developed melody/main hook. Layering of parts - synths, etc - create an impactful and dramatic overall structure.

Someone is making a film of your life, who will play you?
Me, or Isla Fisher.

Lastly, tell us one thing you have never revealed in an interview…
My accordion’s name is ‘Elodie’ (like melody), it’s so pleasing for a piano player with its set (already voiced) buttons for major, minor, dominant chords, not diminished though as I couldn’t carry the heaviest size! It’s already had its first holiday in France.
