Ikes is about to drop his Outside:In project. His cinematic offering was directed by Olan Collardy and inspired by the popular British crime drama series Luther. In the film, Ikes is forced to make the tough decision of killing his former self in order to evolve into something entirely different. We caught up with Ikes to find out a little more about where he gets his inspiration from.

First up, tell us bit about yourselves - what were you doing before you started making music?
Goes back a long while for me, I was still at uni, studying for a degree in Maths & Finance haha, completely unrelated I know…

What was the first style or genre of music you really got into? Was there a particular song or artist who inspired you?
I grew up on rap, soul classic, and African beats from a young age. Back then Michael Jackson was everything; I remember the cassette tapes, and watching videos attempting to emulate his moves.

Tell us when you realised you wanted to get involved in making music and playing tunes to people?
Though I’ve always made music since I was around 14, I really found myself and knew I wanted to be a musician full time when I was studying at uni. I took advice to make a MySpace profile, and when I did the response I got from all different sides of the world was just so amazing! I wanted to feel like that everyday!

If you could go back in time and give yourself one piece of advice that day, what would it be?
I’d say invest wisely, and be patient, your time will come.

How do you set about writing tunes? Is there a common starting point for all your work?
I usually write and form a song from having some initial sounds, which I refer to as a “bed” I ask myself what the sounds are telling me audibly and visually, then I take it from there.

If your music was a person, how would you describe their personality and where would they live?
I would say they had depth, character, mood swings and were very unpredictable in a person this would be awful, even though they meant well.

I pray for the opportunity, and that I deliver to the best of my ability. Every show is a blessing for me.

What are your top three “must haves” while you’re on tour?
A mini studio; so my laptop, microphone and soundcard. It’s important I’m able to record as ideas and inspiration run on their own schedule. Secondly a wifi connection, I’m big on social media so I like to stay connected. Lastly I’ll always have a book of choice, I like to read on my travels. Right now I’m reading Napoleon Hill’s ‘Think And Grow Rich’.

What have you been listening to this year so far?
It’s been an interesting year as everything can be streamed now, which has really opening the industry up. My love for different sounds now is more than ever; I’ve been listening to old soul greats like Smokey Robinson and Sam Cooke, alternative artists such as Broken Bells and Tame Impala. Huge year for hiphop also I been loving Future, A$AP Rocky, Big Sean, I like Travis Scott too.

Do you have any pre-set rituals?
I pray for the opportunity, and that I deliver to the best of my ability. Every show is a blessing for me.

What was the most significant moment of 2014 for you and why?
I released a single called “No Commercial” which topped the College hiphop radio charts in the states. Big moment for me as it basically said that my sound was accepted across the border and could actually be a success on a bigger scale. Onwards and up!

If you could collaborate with any living artist, who would it be?
It would probably be Nas, he’s my biggest rap inspiration and the reason why I wanted to take up this art to begin with. A collaboration with him would be a definitive moment for me, an opportunity to showcase my content and put me in the bracket of credibility.

How is the rest of 2015 shaping up for you? Where can we see you play?
Right now and for the next few months the focus is “Outside|In”, a 7 track project that’ll take my audience on a journey and hopefully introduce or reintroduce me to the masses. I’m performing at XOYO Sept 16th in London, opening up for Vinny Chase who’s coming over from the states! I’m also planning a launch for the project when it’s released where I plan to perform the whole thing with my live band!

Outside In is released on September 18th. Pre-order on iTunes to get “Pray For Me” right away. Watch the video for “Pray or Me” below and find out more at http://lifeofikes.com
