Highland Park Collective curates the expression of a creative lifestyle through different mediums of art, with a revolving door of talent contributing towards the goal of creating original ideas and pushing culture forward. We caught up with them to discuss their most recent single, ‘Feel Like You Do’.
We want you to dance. We want to have big moments.
First up, tell us bit about yourselves - what led you all to forming Highland Park Collective?
Well, we got a house and all moved in and started making art and music. We just decided that we should formalise it one day. We all live in HP so it just kind of stuck.
Who did your take inspiration from?
Ourselves, I guess.
Why the name ‘Highland Park Collective’?
It’s where we reside and we’re a band - BOOM.
How would you describe your musical style?
Weird. Half pop half rock. We want you to dance. We want to have big moments.
Tell us about your most recent single ‘Feel Like You Do’. What’s it about?
It’s about Angie Simms. We were dating for a long time. It’s about those crazy thoughts you have when you’re sooooo in love. “Put your lips in stone” romantic shit.
When did you write ‘Feel Like You Do’ and where did you record it?
Wrote it with Blake Healy in LA about a year ago. Then went to NY to finish it with Shep and Aaron who are helping us with the release of it.
How does ‘Feel Like You Do’ represent your style?
Well the verse and chorus are so different. And for us it’s just fun to do those sort of right turns and weird shit.
What response did ‘Feel Like You Do’ get?
Everyone has been liking and sharing and messaging. But streams are low which is bullshit. There’s so much music out there. Breaking through and getting new people to hear is nearly impossible.
What are your plans for 2019 in terms of touring and releases?
Ton more songs. Hopefully some shows!
Finally, if you could go back in time and give yourselves one piece of advice, when would it be and what would you say?
Learn how to read music. Don’t be so hard on yourself. Don’t worry. Stick with karate.
