Singer and rapper Ember Phoenix from West London released album Levels last December and worked with the Grammy-nominated Beast on single ‘Jodeci’. We spok to Ember Phoenix about the single and how he defines his sound.
‘Jodeci’ is about Netflix and Chill.
Tell us bit about yourself - what were you doing before making music?
I’ve always been working some type of job and from my late teens in the streets, playing a balancing game. I was lucky, no criminal record and my CV is healthy. Music was the escape from that.
What was the first style or genre of music you really got into? Was their a particular song or artist who inspired you?
Grime was the starting point for me. I liked Garage but I loved Grime, I still do. Dizzee was the most inspiring person to me from those days. Then later I became a Hip Hop head for life.
How would you describe your musical style?
RnG. Rhythm and Gangster. A mix of trap, hip hop and RnB.
How do you set about writing tunes? Is there a common starting point?
Usually starts by me hearing something dope. A sick beat or just a dope chord sequence. If we’re starting from scratch I usually have a melody in my head then build from there.
Tell us about new single ‘Jodeci’. What’s it about?
‘Jodeci’ is about Netflix and Chill. Kinda like a braggy love making song. I had fun making it, as it should be.
The ‘Jodeci’ instrumental came courtesy of Grammy-nominated Beast. What was it like working with Beast? What did you learn from them?
Beast is my mate so it’s easy to make music with him. We just click. Beast is really particular about sonics whereas I can rush so patience is a lesson I’m always re-learning.
Are you pleased with how the video turned out?
My boy Darius Alexander filmed it, it’s dope. Clean… the way we intended.
What are your hopes for ‘Jodeci’?
Hopefully to catch the ears of people globally, especially towards the US. The UK has been showing love so to be recognised internationally for what I do would be dope.
What’s coming up for you this year?
New project, dropping early 2017, more music, more bangers, more waves.
What would make 2017 a successful year in your eyes?
To sign a Record/imprint Deal with a label that understands my vision.
Finally, if you could go back in time and give yourself one piece of advice, when would you go back to and what would you say?
The moment I sat with Morpheus… and I would say take the red pill, seek the truth.
