DAN FRESHER is a rapper based in Easton, Bristol who’s new single, ‘Follow Me, Run’ is on an electronic, futuristic pop vibe. It’s out on Friday, August 2nd and we spoke to Dan to find out more.
Super messy and a bit inappropriate.
First up, what got you into music?
Ultimately, drums was the first thing that got me into music! My mum got me a little African xylophone when I was younger and I used to bash it the little sticks and from that point I knew I wanted to do music as much as possible for the rest of my life. I also have really early memories of Adam & The Ants and Jamie Cullum playing in the car, which got me into unique and cool artists from a young age.
Were there any particular bands or artists you took inspiration from?
BROCKHAMPTON’s the reason I started to make my own music as a rapper. I discovered them early 2018 just after they released Saturation I, II & III all in one year and was so inspired by their work ethic and weird ass DIY music videos they made before they got signed. For ‘Follow Me, Run’ specifically though, it’s inspired by the soundtrack to the movie Drive, it’s wild.
How would you describe your style?
As a producer, ‘Follow Me, Run’ is the first beat I’ve ever made so I’ve got no idea where I’m going next. As a rapper, if it’s mixtape stuff, then I’ll adapt to the sound of the beat and just rhyme about how it makes me feel. I’ve recently worked with my pal, a DJ/producer called Ferris, who makes laid back, chilled out stuff which is super suave, so I’ll try emulate that.
As a person I’m either really, really down or really, really buzzed and happy so that comes out (a bit too much sometimes) in the music.
If you could collaborate with any living artist, who would you choose?
Enter Shikari are in my opinion the greatest/most interesting band ever, but my voice and style is wildly different to them so maybe not! It probably has to be Joji. The idea of rapping on a tune with him singing turns me on massively, haha.
Tell us about your new single ‘Follow Me, Run’. What’s it about?
It’s inspired by my childhood friend Harry who one day was like, f!ck it, and left the UK to travel the world and he’s totally met someone out there and fallen in love. I miss him a lot. Harry if you’re reading this, shave your beard bro.
When did you write it, and where did you record it?
I started making the beat this previous summer on a plane on the way to Greece for a lil’ holiday with my girlfriend and her family and the single art is a pic she took of my legs on a beaut beach there… by the middle of the holiday, I’d written the lyrics, and had the concept down, and couldn’t wait to get back and record it.
Recording was done in my house in Bristol, my band/housemates have pimped out one of the rooms with foam panels everywhere so we can record or practice anytime we need to, it’s great.
How does ‘Follow Me, Run’ represent your style?
Super messy and a bit inappropriate.
What are you hopes for ‘Follow Me, Run’?
I would love it to be streamed and enjoyed by peeps all over the world. I’m just messing around and trying different styles, and it would be cool to gain some traction online so I can do really more hip-hop-esque stuff and get people to hear it. It’s all part of the long steady process of trying to be a supposed artist I guess.
I’m also filming the video for it, trying to get that cracking but it’s taking ages cause my plan is to have like 20 different locations throughout the vid.
What other plans do you have for the rest of the year?
Make new beats each week and by the end of the year have my debut album nearly done, ready for release next year. I’m simultaneously getting together another mixtape and diving into sampling old songs into beats too.
I’m also gonna get up the courage to go rap at some hip-hop nights around Bristol, the scene is amazing here. I try do too much all at once when i’m feeling inspired, it’s an illness. I totally had a mental breakdown to my band like last week which was fun.
Finally, if you could wish for one thing to happen for you this year, what would it be?
I just really want a Nintendo Switch. Or decent monitors to mix with in my bedroom. Or more time. I don’t know what’d be best.
