New singer/songwriter CPSD describes his music as ‘hip hop influenced garage blues’. He releases his first single, ‘I’m Gone’ on July 1st - we spoke to him about his music career so far.

Considering I’m a guitarist foremost, generally that’s the last part I’ll write, which I find weird now I think about it!

Tell us bit about yourself - what were you doing before making music?
I’m Leeds born-and-bred, but based out of Bradford. I have two beautiful children, also play guitar for Maxi Jazz and the Etype Boys, and front an alt-country band called Hoodoo Operators. Prior to that I worked for an opticians for 13 years.

What was the first style or genre of music you really got into? Was their a particular song or artist who inspired you?
The first act to make me interested in music was Bros, believe it or not, ha ha! As for a reason I wanted to make music, it was Oasis and Hendrix. The person who inspired me to start messing with electronic aspects of music is my good friend - amazing hip hop/dub artist LSK.

What was the biggest lesson you learnt in 2016?
Don’t be afraid to create music without guitars, ha ha!

What was the musical highlight of 2016?
Skeleton Tree by Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds. Literally an artist baring everything to the world, it’s stunning.

What is your musical highlight of 2017 so far?
My musical highlight so far this year was getting to do my first TV spot with the Etype Boys, and recording a video promo for Blackstar Amps.

Who are you excited to hear from in 2017?
Yelawolf and Queens of the Stone Age.

How do you set about writing tunes? Is there a common starting point?
I generally start one of two ways, which is either writing lyrics with a preconceived tune in my head, then making music to fit, or I make a beat and then write to it. Considering I’m a guitarist foremost, generally that’s the last part I’ll write, which I find weird now I think about it!

Define your sound in five words.
Hip hop influenced garage blues.

Tell us about your debut single ‘Im Gone’.
It’s main riff was me trying to remember something by an old garage rock duo I saw about 10 yrs back and getting it wrong, but stumbling upon something that just seemed to fit with the vibe of the lyric. I’d describe it as Howlin wolf meets Crystal Meth.

What inspired the single?
The lyric is something I’ve had for a long time, based on a relationship breakdown in my past. I always liked the image it created, just needed to find the right way to present it and I think this is it.

If the single were an animal, what animal would it be?
A sad rhino, ha ha! It’s heavy as hell, but has a frowny face!

What are your hopes for the single?
That people like it and come see the live shows.

If you could jam with one artist alive or dead, who would it be?
I have two! Bjork would be amazing to try create something with, and Ben Harper to steal his slide licks!

If you could have written one song by another artist, what would it be?
‘Freebird’ by Skynyrd, because it’s FREEBIRD!!!

Someone is making a film of your life, who will play you?
Steve Buschemi in Airheads is a pretty close likeness to me, so him, ha ha!

Finally, if you could go back in time and give yourself one piece of advice, when would you go back to and what would you say?
Probably go back to when I was an 18-year-old metal head, who listened to nothing modern, and tell myself to lighten up. Life’s too short not to try everything while you can.

CSPD’s debut single ‘I’m Gone’ will be released on July 1st.
