Born in Australia and half-Spanish, Chantal O’Brien now lives in London as she pursues her music career. Classically-trained up to the age of 18, Chantal is heavily influenced by some of the biggest names in pop such as Adele, Christina Aguilera and Whitney Houston. We spoke to Chantal following the release of new single ‘I Need You’.
I am super proud of my works and I can’t wait to share more songs that are waiting in the wings to be released for 2018.
**First up, tell us bit about yourself - what first got you into music? **
Unfortunately, I was very young to remember, however my parents realised I had some music interest when I was around 3-4 years old. So music has been a huge part of my life, and of who I am today. Though, weirdly enough I did quit music all together for one year when I was 16 years old, it was the most miserable year of my life. I can’t believe that I did it, to this day, because of a teacher, who shall be nameless. 😉
Were there any particular bands or artists you took inspiration from to form your musical and thematic style?
There were many artists, however if I limit it down to the top five artists they would be Christina Aguilera, Adele, Queen B (Beyonce), Mariah Carey and of course Whitney Houston. These five female artists are very empowering and though they are different stylistically in their own way, they are huge inspiration vocally and performance wise.
How would you describe your style?
Very good question. My style is mainly pop with an energetic performance. I also love the use of lighting, as lighting to me is a huge element to a performance. For example, I Need You, I would be using a lot of different lighting, where it flickers and changes patterns, being in sync with the music throughout. I feel that this also connects with the audience by heightening one of the senses, seeing/visual. I love making it entertaining!
How do you create your music? Is there any kind of routine that helps?
There is a particular routine that we [the producer and I] go through. We check out some songs we want to get inspiration from and then from there we create the music. Once we have created the music, we then take a mini break and then come up with the melody and lyrics of the song.
What’s been your highlight this year?
Been able to share my different sound with the world! Since my release of ‘Roller Coaster’, to now the release of ‘I Need You’, I feel that musically I grown so much and I continue to grow everyday! I am super proud of my works and I can’t wait to share more songs that are waiting in the wings to be released for 2018.
Tell us about your single ‘I Need You’ - what’s it about?
Sure thing, I Need You is about a woman using her seductive charm to capture this guy’s attention and heart. In the Music Video it explains in more depth. See, we [women] have this power to seduce men and get any man we really want. So the song is about the journey of how this woman really likes this guy, so she uses her skills to get him and she tells him she needs him. But in the end it was a game, she was toying with his emotions. It was a fun song to make, I am not a manipulator in real life, I promise. haha.
When did you write it and when did you record it?
We actually wrote it and recorded it on the same day. It was at the end of January of this year (2017).
How does it build on your previous releases?
Well it is quite a contrast, which I like anyway. I don’t like making the same similar strand of music. I feel that this blocks my creativity. I like creating songs within the Pop genre but then adding different influences of Country, Ballads, House and many more. It also depends on how I feel at that particular moment in my life. There will be a few more Single releases before I release my album.
What are your hopes for ‘I Need You?’
My hopes are that people will enjoy the song and that it gets played on nights out in clubs etc. Which is actually happening right now, a few DJ’s have been playing my song in the US and in Europe. So it exciting to see that people are enjoying it!
When and where can we expect to see you on tour next?
Good question! We are currently arranging this as we speak. All dates and venues will be announced shortly and you can check my website out and Facebook. It will start in early January and in London.
If you could collaborate with any living artist, who would it be?
Wow, this is a hard question, because there are many. Well, in the english music market it would be either Demi Lovato, she is incredible and/or Sia she is amazing and her writing is just incredible! Then in the Latin music market it would be Shakira and/or Enrique Iglesias. They are amazing artists and hitting the Latin music by storm. I only say this because I am half Spanish and I will be releasing a Spanish song in 2018.
What have you been listening to this year? Can you give us a top three records of the year so far?
I have been listening to a lot of music from the top 40 in the English and Spanish market and so far my top three records are Rockabye - Clean Bandit ft. Anne-Marie & Sean Paul, Despacito - Luis Fonsi ft. Daddy Yankee and Shape of you - Ed Sheeran.
Finally, if you could go back in time and give yourself one piece of advice, when would it be and what would you say?
If I went back in time, it would be when I was 16 years old and told my 16 year old self that you need to believe in yourself and that you will be fulfilling your dreams, just stick to it and don’t give up!
