Belfast’s dreamy pop noise trio Beauty Sleep formed last year and have new single “The Dark” out now. We spoke to band members Ryan McGroarty, Cheylene Murphy and Aimee Williamson.
We made a real effort to create our own little world based on us bouncing off of each other as people and musicians.
First up, tell us bit about yourself - what were you doing before your music career began?
Cheylene: We’re Beauty Sleep, we’re a dream pop band from Belfast. We all met at a house party spelling out swear words on a crossword on a fridge.
Before that myself and Ryan were busy with Wonder Villains, Aimee played in a band called Little Neddy Goes to War. Aimee also is an amazing 3D artist and animator! We’ve all been playing music since we were teenagers, so I guess before that we were at school not doing our homework!
What was the first style or genre of music you really got into? Was their a particular song or artist who inspired you?
Ryan: Ash probably inspired me to make music more than any other band. I saw them live when I was maybe 13 and it was all so exciting. I didn’t even know they were from Northern Ireland. I’d look up guitar ‘tabs’ and try and recreate what I’d been hearing. Most of the songs were easier than what I’d been listening to before then. It made me realise I could probably have a go at writing a few too.
How did the Beauty Sleep come about? Did you expect to be following the musical path you are now?
Cheylene: Beauty Sleep came about from us talking about music and experimenting with lots of fun noises in our home studio! It felt really natural, it felt like the music the three of us were always going to make based on all of our weird musical tastes.
If you had to describe your sound as a personality, how what would it be?
Ryan: A majestic bear spreading hugs and love throughout the universe.
What would you say makes Beauty Sleep unique?
Cheylene: I guess what makes Beauty Sleep unique is the collaboration. We made a real effort to create our own little world based on us bouncing off of each other as people and musicians. We collaborated on the artwork too, all of our artwork was created by some awesome artists we are lucky enough to call friends. The music inspired the artwork and and in turn they’ve inspired us even more!

How do you create your music? Is there any kind of routine that helps?
Ryan: I don’t think we’ve landed on a specific routine and pretty much all the songs to date have been written in different ways, in different places. I think the one constant has probably been the laptop. I love the immediacy of modern recording and it definitely informs how we approach the songs. It makes it all feel like magic.
What was the most significant moment of 2015 for you and why?
Cheylene: Beauty Sleep didn’t exist until late 2015 so the most significant moment was forming the band and writing some songs!
What have you been listening to this year? Can you give us a top three records of 2016 so far?
Cheylene: Santigold’s new album – only heard a few of the songs so far but it sounds really exciting. NAO’s ‘Fool To Love’ is awesome, we’re really obsessed with her. Jealous Of The Birds ‘Goji Berry Sunset’ - a local Belfast artist who blows us away constantly, this song’s been stuck in our heads for a while!
If you had to pick one act to see live this year, who would it be?
Cheylene: Dream Wife, they’re our band crush.
If you could collaborate with any living artist, who would it be?
Ryan: It would be amazing to collaborate with Kindness. I got really into the first record and loved the production. I watched a talk he gave last year at the Red Bull Music Academy in Paris on YouTube. He was so open and honest and I really admired that.
How is 2016 shaping up for you? Where can we see you play?
Cheylene: 2016 has been amazing so far – we’ve released our first single and played our first show! We’re planning on continuing to write, record, release and play but no definitive details yet. Follow us on facebook/twitter/instagram - we’ll shout it from the rooftops when we’ve booked our next show!
If you could pick any venue or festival to play, where would it be and which slot would you most enjoy?
Ryan: We would love to play Icelandic Airwaves. We have a list of countries we have yet to visit and it’s potentially topping the list!
