Producer/DJ Bassboy experiments by merging the spectrums of UKG, bassline and grime. Last year he released Bassline Collection Vol 2 of tunes spanning the last 10 years and EP Badboy featuring , which featured Pz Da Architect and ARIA. We spoke to Bassboy about his 2017 and plans for 2018.
Bassline Collection Vol 2 managed to reach number 1 in the UK garage charts on Juno.
First up, tell us bit about yourself - what first got you into music?
Hi, I’m Bassboy, I’m a producer/DJ from the UK, I got into music a very long time ago, like in 2000 haha, I got into it from making songs on Playstion 2.
Were there any particular bands or artists you took inspiration from to form your musical and thematic style?
Yeah, I used to listen to a lot of Neptunes and Dr Dre, that was a long time ago, now I get a lot of inspiration from Todd Edwards and T2.
How would you describe your style?
What were your best moments of 2017?
Playing at Wildlife Festival, was amazing to see all the supporters and to play to such a big crowd.
Tell us about your project Bassline Collection Vol 2.How did you pick the tunes?
These tunes were picked from a back catalog of over 200 bassline songs made by me in the last 10 years. I have a friend (Blaq Max) who runs the Rebearth label. He did the track-listing and carefully picked from a list based on feedback from fans.
How does it represent your music influences?
Well, it’s all bassline music, so it’s a lot of 4x4 style drums and quirky melodies with heavy basslines. There’s also vocal tracks on there that were quite popular in the early bassline days, so its a wide spectrum of the sound of bassline.
What’s been the feedback so far?
It’s been amazing, the album has managed to reach number 1 in the UK garage charts on Juno, and is number 5 in their overall album charts.
Earlier this year you released EP Badboy. Were you pleased with the response?
Yes, it’s been amazing, the songs on that EP have done really well in the clubs, ‘Badboy’ has been in my set all year, I get a lot of people asking me to play it, had a lot of support from BBC 1xtra, and a lot of DJs.
What’s coming up in 2018?
I will still be touring, so I will be playing out regular, defo working on more music to build a catalog of EPs. I will be working on all types of bass generated styles of music.
If you could collaborate with any living artist, who would it be?
Finally, if you could go back in time and give yourself one piece of advice, when would it be and what would you say?
Don’t reply to that message bro!
