Having penned tracks for the likes of Deno, Tinie Tempah, Da Beatfreakz, Swarmz and Loick Essien, AV Allure (aka Aaron Evans) steps into the spotlight as he makes his artist debut alongside ‘My Ye Is Different’ star OSH with ‘Talk To Me’.
I would describe my musical style as smooth with the rough.
First up, tell us about yourself - what got you into music?
What got me into music was really my environment, since I was a child all I remembered was my mum singing all the time and my dad DJing. As I got older, I realised I even had some uncles who became famous from doing reggae music. I guess being at a young age, and being able to dream unrealistically big, combined with all the inspirations around me just took me down this path.
Were there any particular bands or artists you took inspiration from?
When it comes to me writing and recording I tend to go into periods where I don’t listen to any music and this is just so I can present myself absolute and uninfluenced.
But I have found inspirations in bands and artist like Little Dragon, Lykke Li, Al Green and Curtis Mayfield to name a few.
How would you describe your musical style?
I would describe my musical style as smooth with the rough. My thing isn’t really about how vocally gifted I am, or not, lol, it’s more so about the feeling and presence of the melodies, the vibe of the beat and the energy the two carry together.
I would say it’s perfectly flawed for everyone to enjoy. Think I might even call it “Mandem R&B”, haha.
Haha, why AV? Well, growing up my big cousin always used to call me ‘Velli’ which was an abbreviation of the name I went by at the time, and one day I just uno what ima run with it.
I told some of my other friends and they were like, “Nah, man there’s, like a million Velli’s bro”, so I was like, “Yeah, but I will make sure I’m the (a)uthorised (v)ersion”, then boom, AV was born.
Tell us about your new single ‘Talk to Me’. What’s it about?
‘Talk to Me’ is basically about a situation I reflect on where mistakes were made, and, because of that, a special situation doesn’t work out. Although at face value it’s a sad story, it actually never ended bad, so I’m able to deliver a nicer vibe to it.
When did you write ‘Talk to Me’ and where did you record it?
I first met OSH at Beatfreakz studio where we all worked together about a year ago. We all continued to work, but also individually, and that’s where me and OSH were able to get eventually end up with ‘Talk to Me’.
How does ‘Talk to Me’ represent you?
I wrote talk to me back in September and I continued to record on it completing it bit by bit all the way into February. It’s really important for me to get the perfect takes for what I am trying to achieve, and sometimes this may take longer than expected.
The original recording was done in my home studio so all I had to do was send the vocals over to the big boys to play with!
What are your hopes for ‘Talk to Me’?
Coming through as a UK RnB artist, I’d like to believe ‘Talk to Me’ represents me well! The genre originated in America so once it got here we took influence, but created our own formula, and I now believe the UK is ready to showcase that nationally and internationally.
So in this instance, the cool boy RnB singer energy the song gives fits me fine!
If I am completely honest with you ‘Talk to Me’ has achieved and surpassed all of my expectations, taking into account this being my first single release as a relatively new artist, so really I am just gassed at how it’s all growing. We just need to continue to push as hard as we can to maximise reach.
Finally, if you could go back in time and give yourself one piece of advice, when would it be and what would you say?
Ohh man! Ok I would go back to when I was 17 and tell myself two things:
1: Save your money, drip can’t bring stability! 2: Believe in yourself only you can see your vision!
