The 22-year-old British-Somali singer/songwriter Amun has won the support of Twin B, DJ Ace and DJ Target with her music as she looks to make her mark on the urban scene. We chatted to Amun as she releases new single ‘͚Not Everything’ taken from her EP Separate.
We sometimes compare our lives to others ‘Not Everything’ is a reminder that what is for you will always be for you, so just do you.
**First up, tell us bit about yourself - what first got you into music? **
My names Amun, from London. Music was always a big part of my life growing up, my parents always threw parties and I just soaked up this love for it. It started off just having pure enjoyment listening to music until I woke up one day and I said I want to do that. So I taught myself to sing for years then ended up writing and creating music of my own.
Were there any particular bands or artists you took inspiration from to form your musical and thematic style?
I’ve always had this deep connection to Aaliyah. Growing up she was my favourite artist, even till this day. The music, her style and just the way she carried herself intrigues me. She will be always be my inspiration.
How would you describe your style?
Very laid back. I try and be as comfortable as possible. I’m always in sweats but I rock it well.
You released ‘So Cold’ last month. What response did you get?
The response was good. I think people were excited about someone new on the scene with a different sound.
Tell us about your single ‘Not Everything’. What’s it about?
‘Not Everything’ is basically about knowing you. In this day and age with social media, we have so much references and people to look at we can loose ourselves in the process. We sometimes compare our lives to others ‘Not Everything’ is a reminder that what is for you will always be for you, so just do you.
How does ‘Not Everything’ build on your style?
Great! People really seem to like the RnB element of the song. People are digging the vibe of the video, that’s all I could ask for.
What’s the response been so far?
The other tracks are all about life lessons, that I have experienced at different stages of my life so far, (so relationships, growing up, family) in hopes that the public can relate and feel the message behind the songs. Which basically are about accepting changes, mistakes made in life, because they essentially make you stronger, different and separate.
‘Not Everything’ is taken from your five-track EP ‘Separated’. Tell us about the other tracks on the EP.
That people vibe to it, understand it and essentially relate to it. It’s an introduction to me and it was so much fun creating this project and hopefully it comes across in the music.
What are your hopes for ‘Separated’?
2018, wow, big things - I’m hoping to continue to grow as an artist and learn new things, more albums, singles and videos - it’s now time to show what I can do.
