Andrea Chamberlain and Leon Brown - aka All Flags Are Grey - have previously worked on musical projects together, and have now reconnected to create music. We spoke to them about their debut single ‘Bare Bones’ ahead of its release on Friday, June 30th.
We won’t be limiting ourselves to any one form of expression, ultimately whatever medium works best for any particular message we’ll use.
Why the name All Flags Are Grey?
Lauren Laverne wanted to put all “flags” into Room 101 on the show Room 101… Since there isn’t actually a Room 101, turning them all grey would be another way to achieve the same thing.
Were there any particular bands or artists you took inspiration from to form your musical and thematic style?
I dont think to form this specific track, but we’re big fans of Patti Smith, Jefferson Airplane… Perhaps that comes through in the EP more than on this track. We listened to the David Lynch clown track before this was written - maybe there is a very very small element of that.
You’re hoping to create innovative performance art, using visuals and film to enhance the poignant message that you convey through your music. What’s your plan to achieve this in 2017?
Without wanting to give too much away about what we’ll be doing next, I’d just say that we won’t be limiting ourselves to any one form of expression, ultimately whatever medium works best for any particular message we’ll use.
Andrea: how do you juggle being a musician while co-owning a boutique publishing company that’s partnered with a label in Japan?
I’ve never really see it in terms of juggling - I work on various projects, some more personal to me than others and as long as you create with like-minded people and tell your truth then I never see there is a problem.
Your new single is ‘Bare Bones’. What’s the story behind the song?
Bare Bones tackles the subject of self inflected loss, it’s about showing vulnerability, self loathing and feeling trapped - which I’m sure many people can relate too.
What are your hopes for ‘Bare Bones’?
As our first single, it will be the first thing many people will hear by us, but rather than it be an introduction to a certain “sound”, we hope it also conveys a kind of momentum/progression in how we want to develop. We’ll never write the same song twice so we hope it will also be a kind of snapshot in time for us as we move forward.
When and where can we see you on tour next?
We’ll be announcing UK and European dates for Sept onwards very soon via our social media… So, be sure to follow to get all the up to date info .
If it was your last day on Earth - the countdown clock set to hit zero at 12midnight - what would you do?
I’d carry on doing whatever it was I was doing anyway that day, by the time I had made my mind up to follow some grand plan I would be dead any hows!
Finally, if you could go back in time and give yourself one piece of advice, when would it be and what would you say?
There’s a line in a song by The Dirty Fingernails that goes “you have to remember to be nice to your mum” - I’d go back to my teenage years and sing it to myself whilst slapping myself in the face.
